Fund-A-Need 2008
Visual and Performing Arts Support at Las Lomitas and La Entrada

This year’s Fund-A-Need supports Visual and Performing Arts at Las Lomitas and La Entrada. Due to state budget cuts in education, local funding for arts in our schools will be suspended in specific areas. Las Lomitas and La Entrada teachers have requested money to make up the funding gap and pay for needed enhancements to visual and performing arts programs at both schools.

Visual and performing arts complement and enhance the academic development of children. Children who engage in artistic and musical activities develop creativity, focus, logic, and reasoning skills. These skills support academic growth, build confidence, and develop an understanding of the arts. In many cases, this learning will ignite a life-long passion for, and enjoyment of, visual and performing arts.

Las Lomitas is losing funding to pay for its very popular Artist-in-Residence program that enables students to enrich their art experiences with experts while allowing core teachers to focus on academic areas and provide art fundamentals in day to day lessons. In addition, Las Lomitas would like to enhance the performing arts through field trips to theater productions, symphonies or invite theater groups to teach performing arts in the classroom. Complementing this instruction is a need for equipment, such as remote microphones that will allow audience members to better hear children during performances in Cano Hall. Teachers also need money for scripts, costumes, and props. If funds permit, teachers would also like to purchase more books about artists and the arts as well as support field trips to performances in the area.

At La Entrada there is a need to make Jensen Hall a better venue for performances. Jensen Hall is a multi-purpose room and as such is not optimized for theatrical performances or musical concerts. With the purchase of movable sound and stage equipment, Jensen will be more suitable for performances while preserving it as a multi-purpose space. These equipment purchases will be made using Fund-A-Need dollars and benefit all La Entrada students for years to come.

La Entrada teachers and staff would also like to create permanent and semi-permanent art for the school. In addition to the science garden (supported by Foundation dollars) and landscaping, there is a desire to improve the school environment through art displays created by students. This effort will involve La Entrada art teachers but require guidance from artists experienced in school installations as well as additional materials needed for children to create the art. La Entrada will scale its initial efforts based on the Fund-A-Need dollars raised this year.

What is Fund-A-Need?

Fund-A-Need helps meet the specific funding gaps and needs at each school in a given year. The needs are identified by teachers and recommended to the Foundation by principals. These needs change from year to year based on projected budget shortfalls and identified opportunities. Donations to Fund-A-Need can be made at the annual Spring Auction or via online donation for those who cannot attend the auction but believe in supporting the arts in our public schools.

What has been supported by Fund-A-Need?

To date, Fund-A-Need has helped fund science equipment, classroom technology, library books, textbooks, and playground equipment. Last year, $66,000 was raised to fund science and technology related purchases.
